My Village

My village is Sandalankawa. It is located in Kurunegala District. From Kurunegala, it takes about 2  hours by bus 🚌 to reach Sandalankawa.

As my grandmother told me,our village got the name "Sandalankawa" when the legendary princess kuweni, while  feeling, saw the moon and exclaimed, " Aho! lanka sandalanka!"

My village has a temple, a church, a reservoir and paddy fields. It can be described as a village that perfectly embodies the traditional Sinhalese concept of the ' wewai dagebai gamai pansalai ' ( the reservoir the stupa the village and the temple).

My house is situated a bit further inside the village, which gives us a beautiful, unobstructed view of the paddy fields. In the evening, the sky looks like absolutely stunning. It's a truly peaceful and beautiful sight that calms the mind.

The life of our village still moves to the rhythm of nature. In the morning, we can see farmers tending to their feilds around the wewa, and the sound of temple bells carries on the breeze. The reservoir is not just for irrigation. It is the heart of the community  where people gather, children play and birds come to rest. The ancient dageba ( stupa) in the temple compound stands as a silent guardian of our history an faith, attracting devotees for daily prayers and special poya day ceremonies.

What I love most is the deep sense of community. Everyone knows each other people help one another during harvest time of family events, and elders are treated with great respect. Living here means growing up surrounded by stories, green landscapes, and a culture that values both its past and its future. Sandalankawa is more that just a place on a map. It's a living, breathing and a rich heritage that continues to shape who we are.
